Read it like a pro
A certificate of analysis is the lab’s report card for one batch. Here’s what each section is telling you.
The lab’s name and New York State license, the sample ID (it matches the batch number on your label), the METRC package tag, the sample type — flower, pre-roll, vape oil or concentrate — and the dates it was sampled and reported.
Cannabinoids are reported as a percentage of weight (sometimes mg/g). Raw flower holds most of its THC as THCa, so labs report Total THC = Δ9-THC + (THCa × 0.877) — the 0.877 accounts for the mass THCa loses as it converts. Total CBD uses the same math.
The aromatic compounds behind a cultivar’s nose — myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene and the rest — listed by percent weight. Total terpenes is their sum, and a good read on how loud the jar will smell.
Pass/fail checks against the limits New York sets for adult-use cannabis.
An overall pass or fail, signed by the lab’s director. A batch has to pass required testing before it can move to a dispensary shelf.
Seed to sale
METRC is the track-and-trace system New York’s licensed cannabis businesses report into. Every Sweet’s plant and package has a record in it.
Every plant carries a unique METRC tag and is logged as it moves from vegetative growth into flower.
At harvest, plants are weighed and recorded together as a harvest batch — the origin every package traces back to.
A NYS-licensed lab pulls a sample from the batch. Its results are recorded against that batch before anything can be sold.
Each package gets its own tag, linked to its source batch and its test results.
Moves between licensed businesses travel on a state manifest — what left, where it went and who received it.
The licensed dispensary records the sale, closing the loop from plant to purchase.
Your batch number is the thread: it ties the package in your hand to its harvest, its lab results and every licensed business it passed through.
